How do solar panels work?

A solar PV panel is made up of several cells, which are composed of layers of silicon or another semi-conducting substance that conducts electricity when exposed to light.

The cells can function even on cloudy days without the need for direct sunlight. However, power production increases with solar intensity.

Each solar panel in a solar PV system produces about 355W of energy in conditions of intense sunlight. A typical system produces direct current (DC) electricity and has about ten panels. An inverter is integrated with the system to convert DC electricity to AC because domestic appliances needs alternating current (AC). You can utilise any electricity you generate within your house or export it to the grid.

Solar Energy Storage Batteries

When your solar PV system isn't producing electricity during the day, you can store the extra energy in a battery for usage at night. Instead of importing electricity from the grid and paying your tariff rate for it, you can use the electricity that your battery has stored for free.

The installation of a battery allows you to maximise the energy you produce, and new possibilities are opening up for employing batteries in different ways. For example, smart energy saving time-of-use tariffs allow you to charge and discharge the battery to capitalise on the most advantageous rates.

Maintenance

Solar photovoltaic systems require little upkeep, and the panels should last for at least 25 years. Making sure to trim back any adjacent trees that can cast your system in shade will help to keep your panels working efficiently.

Rainfall in the UK benefits panels that are inclined at 15 degrees or greater, which helps to maintain optimal performance as rainwater will keep your PV panels clean. If you have ground-mounted panels or reside in a location where the air is more dusty, debris is more likely to accumulate so you may occasionally need to have the panels cleaned in certain circumstances.

Costs & Savings

Costs

Domestic solar PV system installation typically costs between £5,995 and £9,995.

The size of the array and any challenges in getting to your roof will have an impact on the price you pay. If you currently have scaffolding up for roof repairs or if you are building a new home, some of the installation costs can be split. Whether you select panels or tiles, building-integrated panels or panels that rest on top of your roof, will also have an impact on costs. The least expensive alternative for an analogous system is panels on top of the roof, while tiles are the most expensive.

Costs can also vary between different brands and product quality, so we recommend asking us for a FREE feasibility report and quote to help you to make the right renewable energy choices for your property.

Export Payments

Any household PV system will occasionally produce more electricity than you can consume or store, in which case the extra will be exported to the grid so that it can be utilised by someone else. Make sure you are receiving an export payment if you want to get compensated for exporting. You will receive export payments if you were able to claim the Feed-in Tariff (which was closed to new applications at the end of March 2019). If not, you must locate an energy company that will compensate you for this surplus.

Small-scale renewable energy producers can now receive financial assistance for the electricity they export to the grid thanks to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). With the SEG, solar PV costs are significantly lower than they would be without it. The SEG in Great Britain compensates you for the electricity you produce.

Savings anually from using the electricity you produce

Most households will utilise between 15 and 25 percent of the energy produced, though this might vary greatly depending on:

  • How many people spend the day at home.
  • Whether you use electricity for cooking.
  • Whether you use a heat pump or another type of electrical heating to heat your house or your hot water.
  • Whether your job is home-based.
  • Whether or not you drive an electric car.

Since all households and lifestyles are different, the best way to get an idea of how much YOU could save by switching to solar is by sending for our FREE, no-obligation Feasibility Report.

Are Solar Panels Right for My Property?

Got a question?  We’re here to help.

  • How much does the installation of solar panels cost?

Domestic solar PV system installation typically costs between £8,000 and £12,000.

Costs can vary between different brands and product quality, so we recommend asking us for a FREE feasibility report and quote to help you to make the right choices for your property.

  • Do I have enough space?

Space is an important factor. The typical system size is about 3.5kWp and occupies approximately 20m2 of roof space.

The best roof is one that faces south and is not shaded for maximum power production. North facing roofs are not advised, although east or west facing roofs could still be taken into consideration. Around 15–20% less energy will be produced by a system facing East or West than by one facing directly south.

  • What if my roof is in the shade?

Any neighboring structures, trees, or chimneys may shade your roof and harm the efficiency of your system.

Finding a position without any shade is ideal, although it's not always possible to do so. Utilizing "optimisers," certain solar PV systems may reduce the effects of shade. Other than the increased monitoring options they provide, using optimisers is neither necessary nor advantageous if you don't have shading because they don't produce more energy.

  • Do I need permission for solar panel installation?

As "permitted developments," solar PV systems often don't need planning approval. However, there are exceptions, so it's advisable to seek advice from your local planning office. Additional limitations can be in place if you reside in a listed structure, conservation area, or national park.

You must register your solar PV system with your distribution network operator if you intend to install one in your house (DNO). The DNO is the organization in charge of supplying power to your house. The device will typically be registered for you by your installer.

  • Can I sell surplus energy back to the grid?

Yes! As long as certain requirements are met, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) in Great Britain permits Generators to earn payments from power suppliers for the electricity they export back to the National Grid.

  • Do you need to visit my home to produce my Feasibility Report?

No, there is no need for a home visit. We will call you to discuss your property in more detail and address any questions or concerns you may have. We will then use this information to produce your feasibility report remotely and send it to you via email.
